ROOT CANAL TREATMENT, CROWNS AND BRIDGES
ROOT CANAL THERAPY (ENDODONTIC TREATMENT)
Root Canal therapy is the process of removing bacteria and soft tissue from the root canals of teeth. (Root canals are small canals inside the roots of teeth where nerve endings exist.).When a tooth’s root canal becomes infected the nerve tissue needs to be removed in order to save the tooth. Once the bacteria and soft tissue are removed, the root canals are cleaned, shaped and sealed with a filling material to prevent further infection.
At Waverley Family Dental, we use a Rotary Endodontic machine, which means root canal treatment that is quicker and less painful.
A crown is normally recommended for a tooth that has undergone root canal treatment, as a tooth after undergoing treatment may be more likely to fracture.
Crowns (aka caps) cover over a tooth, and are cemented to a tooth. They are used to strengthen teeth that have been broken or decayed, and to make the decayed teeth look better. Dental labs will make a crown based on a mould that was made by the dentist.
A bridge is where the dentist uses existing teeth to support a new artificial tooth. It is permanently fixed to the mouth. It is made up of two crowns for the teeth on either side of a gap (the anchoring teeth). Rigidly attached in the middle of the two crowns is false tooth/teeth. The crowns are then cemented to the existing teeth, and in the gap are the false teeth.
